Phishing continues to dominate as the most common type of cyberattack, posing a major threat to individuals and businesses alike

According to the government's own UK Cyber Security Breaches Survey, phishing attacks remain the most prevalent form of cyber incident, affecting 38% of businesses and 25% of charities. More concerningly, phishing was also identified as the most disruptive type of attack experienced by organisations that suffered a cyber breach.

The survey found that phishing-only attacks
are becoming more common!

At the same time, Companies House has issued fresh warnings about fraudulent invoices and payment requests being sent to company directors. These scams are designed to appear official and often use convincing branding, language and formatting to trick recipients into making payments or providing sensitive information.

Businesses are reminded that unsolicited payment requests should always be treated with caution and verified independently before any action is taken.

The connection between these two stories is clear. Many modern scams begin with a phishing email that appears to come from a trusted organisation, government body or supplier. Criminals know that busy directors and business owners often handle invoices, compliance notices, and administrative requests every day. By creating a sense of urgency or authority, scammers hope recipients will act before stopping to question whether the message is genuine.

For small businesses in particular, the financial impact of
a successful phishing attack can be significant!

Beyond any immediate financial loss, organisations may face operational disruption, reputational damage and the cost of recovering compromised systems. Yet despite the continuing threat, many smaller organisations still lack formal incident response plans or structured cybersecurity procedures.

The message for all business owners is straightforward. Staff should be encouraged to question unexpected emails, verify payment requests through trusted channels and remain cautious when clicking links or opening attachments.

A few moments spent checking an email or invoice could prevent a costly mistake and help protect the organisation from one of the UK's most persistent cyber threats.

Cybersecurity is no longer just an IT issue; it is a business issue.

Until next time ...
