Most of us still think about mobile phone theft in terms of losing an expensive piece of technology. It is inconvenient, frustrating and potentially costly to replace, but I feel the bigger risk today is what that phone gives a criminal access to ... Protect yourself from device theft and banking fraud by prioritising your mobile phone security Our phones have become wallets, filing cabinets, email accounts and banking terminals all rolled into one. If somebody gets hold of an unlocked device, or knows how to unlock it, the value of the handset itself could quickly become the least of your worries. I think one of the most concerning aspects of device theft and banking fraud is just how quickly it can happen!Imagine sitting in a café, replying to a message with your unlocked phone on the table. Somebody grabs it, and suddenly they have access to your emails, messages, photographs, notes and apps. Even seemingly harmless information could help a fraudster piece together enough personal details to target your bank accounts or impersonate you elsewhere. There is also something called 'shoulder surfing', which we should all be more conscious of when using our phones in public. A criminal watches while you enter your PIN, then steals the device, knowing they already have the code required to unlock it. We naturally protect our PIN at a cash machine, yet how many of us type our phone PIN into a screen several times a day without considering who might be watching?Biometrics such as fingerprints and facial recognition can provide useful layers of security, but criminals are continually looking for ways around the protections we put in place. Distraction and confusion can sometimes be used to persuade somebody to unlock a device or banking app without fully realising what they are doing.
