There is something rather fascinating about the arrival of the new King Charles 10p coin. More than seven million are being released into circulation, meaning they should soon start appearing in our change ...

The new King Charles 10p coin has been released into circulation as Britain continues to shift towards a cashless society

The new King Charles 10p coin has been released into circulation as Britain continues to shift towards a cashless society

I think it is one of those small moments of history that many of us will experience without really noticing. You buy something, receive your change, and suddenly there is the King looking back at you from a 10p coin.

This is the first time a 10p coin bearing King Charles III's
portrait has been released into general circulation!

Around 600,000 of the coins are dated 2023, with a further 6.5 million dated 2026 now being distributed across the UK. The 10p becomes the fourth denomination featuring the King's portrait to enter circulation, following the 5p, 50p and £1 coins.

So, how do you spot one? Turn it over, and you will find a capercaillie on the reverse. This large woodland bird is now considered at serious risk of disappearing from Britain, and I feel its inclusion says something interesting about how our coinage is changing.

The designs featuring British flora and fauna reflect the King's longstanding interest in conservation.

The new King Charles 10p coin is also likely to be something of a novelty for a while. Coins featuring Charles still represent only a tiny proportion of all those currently circulating in the UK. Queen Elizabeth II coins remain legal tender and will continue to circulate alongside them, allowing the transition to happen naturally rather than withdrawing and replacing billions of perfectly usable coins.

I find it interesting that this new coin is arriving at a time
when we are increasingly using less physical money!

Figures show cash accounted for only 8% of UK payments during 2025, compared with 45% in 2015. Even so, around 1.4 million adults still primarily rely on cash for everyday spending.I feel that makes the new King Charles 10p coin more than just an interesting piece of change.

It is also a reminder that although cards, phones and digital payments dominate our lives, cash hasn't disappeared quite yet.

Perhaps that is why the new King Charles 10p coin is worth watching out for. I think there is something rather nice about discovering a little piece of changing British history unexpectedly sitting in the palm of your hand.

Until next time ...
