The Companies House data glitch has left many wondering whether their records have been changed. The safest move is to review filings, confirm details, and report anything unusual quickly. A calm check now can prevent bigger headaches later ...

Companies House data glitch, Numbers and names mixed up, Confusion reigns free

The Companies House data glitch has prompted a lot of sensible concern, but the best response is not panic; it is a careful check of the facts. You can start by reviewing your company's online profile, recent filings, and confirmation statement history to see whether anything looks out of place.

I checked Essendon's as soon as the news broke!

I've said to many of my own clients that a good first step is to compare the public record with your own paperwork, because that is often where a Companies House error shows up first. If the registered office, officer details, shareholder information, or filing dates do not match what you expect, that may indicate that business records have been altered or simply a data filing issue that needs sorting.

It is also worth checking whether anyone in your business has received unexpected emails from Companies House or a filing confirmation that nobody recognises. In a case like this, small clues matter, especially when problems can be hidden inside something that looks routine at first glance.

The most practical approach is to open your company's filing history and look for anything unfamiliar, such as changes submitted on unusual dates or forms that were not authorised. If a director, company secretary, or adviser notices a discrepancy, that should be treated as a possible Companies House error until proven otherwise.

You should then contact Companies House directly and explain what looks wrong, keeping a note of the date, time, and details of the issue. If your company uses an agent or accountant, it helps to ask them to cross-check the business records as well, because a second set of eyes can make data filing issues easier to spot.

It is reassuring that most firms will not
find anything alarming!

The glitch is unlikely to have affected every business in the same way. Even so, a quick review now is sensible protection against company registry problems, and it gives you confidence that your records are still accurate and under control.

Do be assured that Companies House took this data glitch very seriously and turned off its web services until it could diagnose and fix the problem. They also referred themselves to the ICO for an official investigation.

Like I said above, the Companies House data glitch is unlikely to have affected every business the same way. Do check as soon as you can, as it's better to be safe than sorry.

Until next time ...
