This scheme allows SME employers, with less than 250 employees, to apply via HMRC and recover the cost of Coronavirus-related Statutory Sick Pay. Employers will be able to claim online from 26th May 2020.

"They will receive SSP repayments paid to current or former employees from 13th March 2020 onwards!"

The Government says it is "committed to supporting SMEs throughout the pandemic" and this rebate will put money back in the pockets of millions of employers, ensuring that when the economy opens back up, they can hit the ground running.

Statutory Sick Pay is currently paid at £95.85 per week and, of course, employers can pay more than that if they choose to, but can only claim the standard SSP rate.

HMRC has worked hard to deliver this scheme for employers with less than 250 employees and is designed to give SMEs everywhere the reassurance and help they need as they support their own staff through the pandemic.

"I feel this is a very positive move from the Government!"

Any employer is eligible if their PAYE scheme was started before 28th February 2020 and they have less than 250 employees. The repayment covers up to two weeks SSP and is payable if an employee can't work because of Coronavirus.

Until next time ...
