In other years, extra Bank Holidays have been added to cover things like royal weddings and the Queen's Jubilee. In 2020, Early May Bank Holiday is simply being moved so the total will not change.
You may find your employees wondering if they're going to get that Friday off rather than the Monday that week and asking you about it when they realise. But it all depends on their contracts of employment, so it's a good idea to check sooner rather than later and be ready to advise them.
Employees usually do not have a statutory right to Bank Holiday's off. It really is down to the individual employer. If your employee's contracts require individuals to work on Bank Holidays then this can still continue providing each employee is given time off in lieu.
If your employment contracts have listed all the Bank Holidays in a year by actual date, then you will need to issue an amendment for 2020 or else your employees may find you're expecting them to work on both the Friday and the Monday, which is now not a Bank Holiday at all.
Although this is an HR matter, it may still affect payroll calculations so I felt it was worth blogging about. Do take the time to check this issue with the 2020 Early May Bank Holiday and decide what you want to do regarding the move. Both you and your employees need to be aware of what is going to happen next May and the days they are expected to work.
