The register, and the equivalents in Scotland and Northern Ireland, are to receive new powers to improve the quality of the company register as well as being able to query suspicious appointments and filings. In some cases, they can request further evidence, or even reject a filing.
It will also have an extensive gateway to law enforcement to allow it to easily share data with the police, other government bodies and even the private sector where appropriate.
Individuals setting up, managing or controlling companies will also be forced to prove a verified identity and have registered via an anti-money laundering third-party agent, so anonymous filings will become almost impossible.
I'm pleased these changes will soon be in effect. It's a chink in the armour of Companies House that is being dealt with. Tackling fraud and reducing crime will only benefit the economy in the long run and will show the world we are a free, open and trustworthy democracy.
