I sometimes find it hard to believe that Essendon has been trading for three years now. I look back with great pride to see how much we have achieved ...

The entire Essendon team (and some of their partners) had a curry night and a quiz to raise funds for the Thames Air Ambulance! For some reason, I paid the tab ...

I say 'we' as it's not just me, but the great people who make up Essendon. I am fortunate to have such a loyal, hardworking team as it results in significant productivity and retention.

A fellow accountant asked me the other day what was my secret, so I thought I would share my top tips with you:

  1. Be generous to your employees, after all, they devote a third of their waking hours to you:

    • Give them the day off for their birthday

    • Permit flexible working if the business needs allow

    • Encourage and sponsor their charity activities

    • Give them time, often in our busy day we forget just to check whether they are OK or need some guidance

    • Invest in their education and training. This may, of course, be in technical studies but what about other personal skills?

  2. Show respect to your employees. Only today I attended a network meeting and listened to the tale of a practice manager of an accountancy firm who had to be dismissed for bullying four trainees.

It doesn't matter whether you are the practice manager, trainee or the cleaner, each individual is an essential cog in the machine. Your business depends on them.

  3. Say thank you, celebrate achievement and have fun doing so. This can be for the completion of a significant project or, like Essendon this week, celebrating a remarkable year of serving our wonderful clients.

Did I really say the bar tab was down to me?

We've all worked incredibly hard to turn Essendon Accounts & Tax into the success it is today, and I'm proud of every single member of my team.

"Here's to the next three years!"
